The Art of Tailoring Dresses

After finally selecting the perfect dress, the anticipation of waiting for it to arrive may leave you feeling more than eager to bring it home with you right away. Although we understand your excitement, we can’t emphasize enough the importance of going through one final step to get your dress ready for your special day: alterations. Here’s an inside scoop on the art of tailoring dresses:

When people think of alterations, they often believe that they simply involve cutting some fabric and running a garment through a sewing machine, but this is far from the case. Tailoring dresses and gowns requires supreme attention to detail, exactness and talent. We have found that many clients are confused about the price tag associated with alterations, but this is because most people tend to be unaware of the amount of work that goes into tailoring a dress.

To get into specifics, lace dresses, for example, must have their entire lace layer removed in order to be altered, and then hand-sewn back on. Beaded dresses also require careful needle work done by hand, and sequined dresses are particularly challenging to tailor because their thicker texture makes them difficult to sew through, especially without causing any damage to the gown. Many prom dresses also have inner linings, which seamstresses have to alter in addition to the gown’s crowd-facing outer layer.

At Dressed In Time, our team includes a professional seamstress that does all of our alterations in-house. Years of experience have led to her perfecting her craft, and we can guarantee that your prom dress is in excellent hands! You will be grateful to have had the patience to ensure that your gown fits flawlessly, and after all, after spending all that time picking out the perfect gown, don’t you want it to feel just right, too?
